Apple iPhone Approved By Feds

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has approved Apple's iPhone for sale in the U.S., according to documents posted on the FCC's Web site Thursday.

Mozilla’s Firefox Wants To Get Social With The Coop.

Last week, Mozilla research group announced that is
currently developing a new set tools, called The Cop. According to Mozilla Labs,
The Coop is a Firefox addon in development that will let users keep track of
what their friends are doing online, and share new and interesting content with
one or more of those friends. It will integrate with popular web services,
using their existing data feeds as a transport mechanism.

Mozilla decided that it’s time for new tools. According
to The Coop project page, at
the beginning this product should minimally provide support for the following
use cases, making them intuitive, pleasant and delightful experiences.

As PlayStation 3 went on sale at midnight last night, Sony said Australian pre-orders for the machine were "well-over" 20,000.

Given PS3's unprecedented price and a string of public relations
disasters that have tarnished the Japanese electronic giant's name,
Sony would be extremely happy with the figure. Nintendo's Wii and
Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold around 30,000 units in their first few days
on sale in Australia.

Strong crowds turned out last night at Myer stores in Sydney and
Melbourne to celebrate the launch, and over 500 other retailers across
Australia opened their doors at midnight to cater for early adopters.

PlayStation 3 launches at record price.

AUSTRALIAN gamers who have suffered a five-month delay in the delivery
of Sony’s PlayStation 3 will be forced to settle for a scaled-back
version of the console when it finally goes on sale at midnight.

Launch parties for Sony’s priciest-ever game console will begin
across the country tonight but there is anger over the difference
between the Australian and US versions.

PS3 systems available in Europe and Australia will not have the same
capabilities of the US and Japanese models, despite costing around $300
more.

The 60GB PS3 was launched in the US last November with a price tag
of $US599 ($770) and costs ¥60,000 ($640) in Japan. The model on sale
in Australia will cost $999.95.

It's been 20 years since the first call was made from a mobile
phone in Australia and the gadget has long since shaken its old
reputation as a yuppie toy.

With mobile phone subscriptions in Australia numbering about 20
million, handsets are now a lot smaller, cheaper and more portable
than their earlier incarnations.

Telstra celebrated the 20th anniversary of mobile telephone
technology in Australia.

On February 23, 1987, Mel Ward, then managing director of
Telecom Australia, made the nation's first mobile call on a
Mitsubishi Electric handset from the Sydney Opera House to then
federal communications minister Michael Duffy.

Microsoft unveils Windows Mobile 6 OS

Redmond (WA) - Amid Microsoft's avalanche of new product and service
launches on January 30, the platform that took a back seat was the
software company's mobile operating system. The new Windows Mobile OS
will get its own debut later this year, and today some light was shed
on what the new version will offer.

Microsoft unveiled Windows Mobile 6 today, and headlining the new
feature list are enhanced Internet functionality, more sophisticated
viewing and editing of Microsoft Office files, and a visual update that
makes it look similar to Windows Vista.

Firefox claws away at Explorer

MORE than a fifth of Australians now use
the Mozilla Firefox web browser, even though site compatibility issues
mean it sometimes must be used in conjunction with Microsoft's Internet
Explorer, researcher Nielsen Net Ratings says.

In a report detailing Australian internet use in 2006, Nielsen reported
that Microsoft's Internet Explorer was still dominant in the market,
with 81 per cent. Firefox accounted for 22 per cent of the market,
while Apple's Safari was the third most popular at 5 per cent.

A star hundreds of light years away has reminded Australians of something they
will loath: they have been saluting an erroneous national flag for more than
a century.

Astronomers have discovered that the Southern Cross — the centrepiece of
Australia’s flag and celestial beacon to navigators down the centuries — has
more stars than the five commonly depicted.

They have spotted a previously unknown star that appears to be orbiting Beta
Crucis, the left-hand star on the Southern Cross, as viewed on the flag.

Marcheline, who had been battling ovarian cancer for more than seven

Teeth like steak knives ... the skull of Australia's fierce marsupial lion that lived during the Ice Age.

Today we know it as a vast, treeless expanse of arid land, but
half a million years ago the Nullarbor Plain was a very different
place.

The red soil was covered in trees where colourful parrots nested
in hollows and tree kangaroos climbed the branches to feast on
leaves. Lumbering below were giant wombats, providing easy prey for
fierce marsupial lions roaming the area.

Bright comet set to enter Aussie skies.

The brightest comet in Australia's skies for more than 40 years will appear from Monday, astronomers say.

Dr James Biggs, director of the Perth Observatory, said the McNaught Comet is currently at its closest approach around the Sun and will become visible to West Australians from Monday for about a week.
