Ah, Vegas in January: the destination of choice for many in the electronics industry. No, the lure isn't just the glitz and the gambling. It's also the annual Consumer Electronics Show. Tech giants such as Hewlett-Packard threw lavish parties. In his traditional keynote, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates promoted the software mega-behemoth's vision of the digital living room. (Stop us if you've heard that one before.)

Tuesday

Have you ever longed for a device that lets you make phone calls, read the Mercury News and other papers online, listen to your favorite music and watch video clips? And would you want it to be small enough to take with you on the light rail? (Or can you tell the writer of In Hindsight has?)
